The embroidery in this category is worked on a ground cloth. Once the stitching is finished that ground cloth is dissolved, leaving the embroidered motifs locked into one another. The result is heavier and more three-dimensional than lace on tulle, and its edges need no support. The trade knows it as chemical lace, after the process.
